Frequently asked questions.

What is product development?

Product development is like building a bridge – you need a solid foundation, careful planning, and systematic execution to get from an initial spark of inspiration to a successful product in customers’ hands. Let me walk you through each stage of this journey, explaining not just what happens, but why each step is crucial for success.

What is market validation and is it important?

Every great product begins with someone recognizing a problem that needs solving. The “Get Idea” stage might seem simple, but it’s actually about identifying genuine pain points in people’s lives or inefficiencies in existing solutions. Think of this as planting a seed – you need fertile ground for it to grow.

However, having an idea is just the beginning. The “Validate Market” stage is where you test whether that seed can actually flourish in the real world. This involves researching whether enough people share this problem and would be willing to pay for a solution. Many entrepreneurs skip this step and fall in love with their idea without checking if the market feels the same way. It’s like building a restaurant without knowing if people in the neighborhood actually want that type of cuisine.

What is a proof concept (Conceptual Prototype)?

Once you’ve confirmed there’s a market need, the “Conceptual Prototype” stage transforms your abstract idea into something you can see and touch. This isn’t about perfection – it’s about communication. Think of it as creating a rough sketch before painting a masterpiece. The prototype might be made from cardboard, 3D printed plastic, or even digital mockups, but it serves a vital purpose: helping everyone involved visualize and discuss the concept.

What is customer validation?

The customer validation stage involves putting your conceptual prototype in front of real potential users. This is where assumptions meet reality, and it’s often humbling. You might discover that what you thought was the main benefit isn’t what customers care about most, or that you’ve solved the wrong part of the problem entirely. It’s similar to a chef tasting their dish before serving it to guests – adjustments are almost always necessary.

What is the difference between a conceptual prototype and functional prototype?

With validated customer needs in hand, you enter the “Design” phase. This is where engineering expertise becomes crucial. Every component, material, manufacturing process, and cost consideration gets carefully planned. If the conceptual prototype was a rough sketch, detailed design is like creating architectural blueprints – everything must be precisely specified and thoroughly thought through.

The “Functional Prototype” that follows brings these detailed designs to life. Unlike the conceptual prototype, this version actually works as intended. It’s the difference between a cardboard mockup of a phone and an actual functioning device. This prototype undergoes rigorous testing to ensure it performs reliably under real-world conditions.

Is validating a design necessary?

Validate a Design involves systematic testing of your functional prototype. You’re not just checking if it works, but how well it works, how it might fail, and what improvements are needed. This stage often reveals unexpected challenges – materials that work differently than expected, manufacturing processes that are more complex than anticipated, or user behaviors that weren’t considered.

If your testing confirms the design’s viability, this is typically when you file a full “Patent Application.” Having proven your concept works gives you much stronger intellectual property protection and demonstrates the invention’s practical value.

Why do I need to design for manufacture if I already have the prototype design?

Design for Manufacture is where your beautifully engineered prototype meets the harsh realities of mass production. It’s one thing to hand-build a perfect prototype in a lab; it’s entirely different to manufacture thousands of units consistently and cost-effectively. This stage often requires significant design modifications – what engineers call “design compromises” – to balance performance, quality, and cost.

I’ve self-funded this far or have raised funding already to reach this far, why is there another funding stage?

The Fund stage after design for manufacture recognizes that turning prototypes into mass production products requires capital. Whether through investors, loans, crowdfunding, or personal resources, you need money for tooling, initial inventory, marketing, and operations. The validation work you’ve done in previous stages becomes crucial here – investors want proof that your product solves a real problem for a willing market. This flows into the “Make” stage, involving setting up production processes, quality control systems, and supply chains. This is manufacturing at scale, where consistency and efficiency become paramount. Every detail from material sourcing to packaging must be systematically managed.

Do I need a marketing and sales team?

With your product being produced in mass for the market, it imperative to educate the public(your market) about your product. Marketing encompasses all the activities that make potential customers aware of your product and convince them to buy it. This includes branding, advertising, public relations, and channel partnerships. Even the best product won’t succeed if people don’t know it exists or understand its value. Next is making the sale transaction and shipping to complete getting products into customers’ hands. This involves everything from order processing and inventory management to customer service and fulfillment logistics.

Product development can feel unsettling, overwhelming, and often like a web of uncertainty. Fortunately, we are here to help. We can offer a structured development process from a single point of contact.
